My definition of a gypsy – A nomadic or free spirited person, a traveler, a wanderer who is sometimes looked down upon for their sense of freedom and little to no fear. They originated in Northern India and spread throughout Europe and the Middle East – they made their way across the globe living on their wits, love and passion. A gypsy soul seeks the next best thing in any life situation.
Stevie Nicks wrote the song originally circa 1979 and found her inspiration from a time she was living with her partner Lindsey Buckingham while she was in college waitressing and barley making ends meet. Her bed was a mattress on the floor yet she made it her own and decorated it with lace and had a vase with a flower at its side.
When I listen to Gypsy I imagine myself in a life before this one where perhaps it was a little easier to live off the earth and identify with the human race. I take the 4 minutes and 25 seconds to forget about the societal pressures we face today and remember that we are truly free. Free to pursue our passions. Free to explore life. Free to meet people that make us feel something. Free to twirl in fields of flowers. Free to be whoever we want to be.
We are all wanderers on this earth. Our hearts are full of wonder, and our souls are deep with dreams.
