One of the best artists that stands out in my mind from 2013 is the English soul singer-songwriter Laura Mvula. I first found myself wagging my head to her music on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic and fell in love when I saw one of her music videos. She grew up writing music and singing in an a capella group, directed a gospel choir and taught for a while. Her well rounded musical background shows in her style. She’s got this old voice that you don’t hear in pop music but the jazz vibe to compliment it perfectly.
