“Healthy Foods” That Are Aren’t Actually Good For You: Protein Bars

It’s impossible to say that all protein bars are bad for you. But I can comfortably say that most of them are.  Why?

  • Most protein bars are made with whey protein, which is a form of dairy. (See Part One of “Healthy Foods That Are Bad For You”)
  • They contain processed ingredients, fillers, and artificial ingredients
  • They have lots of added sugar

Check the nutritional label. If you’re going to eat a protein bar, be sure it’s organic. If there are more than 200 calories, the sugar content is more than 4 grams, or if the list of ingredients is a mile long, you probably shouldn’t eat it.

  1. I go for all-natural bars like Larabars and Pure. They are made from simple ingredients (most Larabars have less than five ingredients) and though they can be a bit high in sugar, it is from fruit so it is a much healthier choice. Homemade protein bars are definitely the way to go to not only eat healthier, but save money!
